Faith Comes From Hearing.

Well, if you have been around Suncrest for the past few weeks, you know that we’ve been working on this series together called “Forgotten Virtues.” Basically, we’re asking the question, what are the virtues that we have lost together as an American culture, and how could we maybe start to bring those back? We’re exploring principles like purity, honor, loyalty, gratitude, and integrity. I don’t think that anyone is opposed to any of these virtues (while we may not always want to practice them, we sure want everyone around us to do so), but they are certainly not ones that come easy and naturally to us as a practice.

I guess that today’s Cultivate blog entry is one that I’d love to use to encourage you/let you know about two different things that I believe can both be important tools in helping to cultivate your personal relationship with Jesus.

The first comes from this series itself. It’s pretty self-explanatory, but I believe that as we grow in the qualities of honor, purity, integrity, loyalty, and gratitude, we’re going to naturally see a growth in our own relationships with Jesus. In fact, I’d say that all of those virtues are (in some way or another) real cornerstones of what it looks like to truly follow Jesus. So together, let’s dive into these principles. Let’s embrace them. And let’s see our world be changed.

But secondly, I want to encourage you with another tool, very closely related to the first suggestion. And that is that a great way to cultivate your relationship with Jesus comes from listening to teaching from the word of God. In Romans 10:17, the apostle Paul writes that “faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” In other words, our faith grows anytime we hear a message from God’s word about Christ. It doesn’t matter whether that talks about who Jesus is, what Jesus stands for, or the kinds of lives that Jesus wants each of us to lead. Our faith in God grows every time we hear a word about Christ taught.

That’s why every Sunday we want to take a sizable chunk of our service to listen to the Word of God being taught, whether that’s from Greg, our campus pastors, or any of our other teachers here at Suncrest. We think that teaching grows our faith and allows us to better cultivate our relationship with Jesus.

So, if you’re looking to check out some great teaching to help grow your faith, go to http://www.suncrest.org/343292.ihtml. Here, you’ll find a listing of all of our teaching at Suncrest, even including some of the ones from so far in the “Forgotten Virtues” series. You can sort by date, teacher, topic, or sermon series so you can find exactly what you are looking for. And once you have found some teaching that you’d really like to listen to, simply click on the small arrow next to the message title to download it to your computer! It’s a great way to get a chance to chew on some of our teaching from the Bible that we experience each Sunday here at Suncrest.

Hope that helps! And I hope you’ll join me in truly embracing these “Forgotten Virtues” together as a church!
